Trivia

  • (TW: Suicide) After Midge gets off the stage in the Paris nightclub, the former New Yorker who has been acting as her translator hands her a card and says, “Here's the card for my psychiatrist who just moved from Boston to New York. He's done wonders for Sylvia Plath.” Sylvia Plath was a poet and novelist, best known for her novel “The Bell Jar.” She committed suicide at the age of 30 by gassing herself in her kitchen oven, after several previous, unsuccessful attempts at killing herself. The episode takes place in 1959, Plath ended her life in 1963 - clearly the psychiatrist did do wonders. (Source: IMDb)
  • The episode won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (One Hour). (Source: IMDb)
  • Lenny Bruce's set at the Gaslight is a recreation of a real bit Lenny did on the Steve Allen Show (watch it here). The Steve Allen Show appearance is later depicted in the season 2 finale, and you can briefly hear part of this same bit repeated in that episode.
  • At the beginning of his set, Lenny jokes, “Will Elizabeth Taylor become Bar Mitzvah'ed?” This is a real joke that Lenny made on The Steve Allen Show, in reference to actress Elizabeth Taylor. Around the time period of the show, she was constantly in the news because her husband Mike Todd (who was Jewish) had just died, and she famously took up with and married Debbie Reynolds' husband Eddie Fisher (who was also Jewish), and at that point she converted to Judaism. Lenny's joke was playing off the fact that she was a “new Jew,” by conjuring up the absurd mental image of Taylor - one of the top sex symbols of the day - going through a Bat Mitzvah. MIDGE: B. Altman. Where may I direct your call? I will connect you.

ABE: And then we'll have a little talk about loyalty. To the person who signs the checks, not the person you like more. American loyalty!

ABE: Oh, zip it, Simone.
