Janusz
Biography
S5E1 - As Susie visits the Weissman apartment to help Abe and Rose interpret Midge’s hypothermia-induced ranting, Janusz works in the background with Zelda, totally unnoticed.
S5E2 - Midge has a frustrating Sunday-morning breakfast with her family. When Midge expresses her concern over who will take the kids while she is at work, Zelda enters the room and reassures her that she will take them, followed by Janusz, who also volunteers to take them and expresses how much he has loved spending time with them. Midge has no idea who Janusz is, but is too polite to say anything until he leaves the room. She soon learns that Abe and Rose don't know who he is either, aside from a vague sense that he was a handyman and had been around on and off for the past few weeks. They shrug it off, because he seems useful.
S5E2 - At 4:56 AM the next morning, Midge wakes up in a panic because she realizes that her job at The Gordon Ford Show will be a sitting job, which she did not consider when choosing her meticulously assembled first-day outfit. She calls Susie, who is very angry to be woken early in the morning, and even angrier when she arrives at Midge's place and learns what this is about. She makes an ultimatum that nobody in the Weissman clan is ever to call her before 10:30 again, but she makes an exception for Zelda, who brings her a fresh cup of coffee. This reminds Midge of Janusz, and she gleefully imparts the gossip on Susie only to learn that she already knows. Susie explains that Zelda and Janusz have been dating for four months, and that she sees them sometimes when they come down to The Village. She is astonished that Midge has failed to notice Janusz in all the time he has been coming to her apartment. She then helps Midge select an outfit, and departs.
S5E4 - As Rose shows Midge some family jewelry and discusses her upcoming theatrical outing with Abe, Janusz presents his special rum-laced babka to the kids and then the adult Weissmans.
S5E4 - Midge wakes with her face on the babka plate, and sees Abe and Rose similarly passed out on their plates. She turns around and spots Janusz carrying the equally unconscious children to bed.
S5E4 - Abe and Rose get home from an awkward argument at dinner to find Zelda and Janusz over a romantic candle-lit dinner. Zelda reveals that Janusz proposed, and she said yes.
S5E5 - The Maisels and Weissmans attend Zelda and Janusz's wedding. A stir is caused when the Weissmans suddenly realize that Zelda will be retiring.
S5E7 - Janusz berates Zelda for coming and helping the Weissmans through a particularly chaotic morning, including a pilot light which is out and a clogged drain causing a flood.
S5E7 - Janusz and Zelda pop in again briefly while Noah and Astrid are visiting, and Zelda finally seems to be getting just as fed up as Janusz is.
S5E9 - Zelda kneels in the bathroom and calls Rose to let her know that Midge will be on The Gordon Ford Show tonight and she has to go watch. When Rose asks her why she’s whispering, she explains that Janusz does not want her talking to them anymore. Despite her caution, Janusz realizes that something is afoot and calls out to Zelda, causing her to abruptly hang up the phone.
Quotes & Dialogue
JANUSZ: I love picking Ethan up after school, and Esther loves to come along. She rides on my shoulders and tells me, “Giddy-up, Janusz!” And that's when I giddy-up and go like the wind. I'm happy to stay and play with them whenever you need me, even at night. They're fantastic. My life was hard: the war, the bombings. So much suffering. But, uh, spending time with your children… They make me think about having my own children. For the first time in my life.
– S5E2
JANUSZ: They'll sleep well tonight. (chortles quietly)
– S5E4
JANUSZ: She said yes!
– S5E4
JANUSZ: Mine has been a life of hardship. Cold winters. Many nights, no sleep. My family lived day to day, but I was good with tools. I could fix what was broken, and that was to be my life, I thought. And then I meet you, Zelda. I did not know I was broken until you were the one to have fixed me.
– S5E5
JANUSZ: I will be providing for you. You will be wanting for nothing. Now, you will finally get to enjoy life, without burden, never having to work another single day for as long as you live.
– S5E5
JANUSZ: And I am your Janusz until we die, together, peacefully, let's hope.
– S5E5
JANUSZ: (in Polish) Zelda… Back in the old country, when a horse is lame, it is useless, so you shoot it. This is an entire house full of extremely lame horses!
– S5E7
MIDGE: I really appreciate your help. It's lucky you were here when this happened, huh?
JANUSZ: Yes, so lucky, like being a leprechaun.
– S5E7
JANUSZ: (in Polish) This is why they always want to kill the fancy folks.
– S5E7
ZELDA: Janusz does not want me talking to you people anymore. He says you are vampires sucking the lifeblood out of us.
JANUSZ: Zelda, who are you talking to?
ZELDA: This never happened. Bye.
