Chester

Susie’s fellow Steiner staff impersonator, and later roommate.

Biography

S2E5 - Chester approaches Susie and lets her know that he knows she’s an impostor, insinuates that he is too, and suggests that they meet again.

S2E5 - In the kitchen, Chester waves a wrench at Susie and silently mouths “Crisscross” to her before resuming his meal: a plateful of raw eggs.

S2E5 - Later, as Susie speaks on the phone with Fred, Chester passes by in a bellhop uniform and silently mouths “Crisscross”.

S2E6 - At the closing Soiree, Chester performs in the “Around the World” dance as one of the Italians. Mid-performance, he mouths his signature catchphrase to Susie.

S3E7 - Susie wakes up in the morning with Jackie and Chester, and reiterates her distress at having recently learned that Jackie sub-sub-let to Chester. After a moment, Sophie calls to thank Susie and notify her of the gift canaries she sent, much to the chagrin of Jackie (who has instituted a no-pets rule for the household) and Chester (who has just killed his cat in compliance with said policy).

S3E7 - Susie once again wakes up in the morning with Jackie and Chester, and receives a call from Tessie, who informs her that their mother’s condition has worsened and she must be put in a nursing home. A moment later, Junior swings by to collect a debt from Susie. She does not have enough money on hand, so she turns to Jackie, who turns to Chester, who turns to Coop to scrape up the cash.

S3E8 - Jackie and Susie decide not to enlighten Chester to the fact that no, the hot water is not out again, it never existed in the first place.

S4E3 - Susie gets home from the Wolford to find Nancy and Chester in her apartment, and the former informs her that Jackie died earlier that day.

S4E3 - Midge and Zelda go to Susie's apartment and help her to clean the place up as she grieves for Jackie. Chester sits in the corner, watching, and shares the history of deaths that apartment.

S4E3 - Susie and Midge arrive at the chapel for Jackie's funeral service, and are shocked to find it empty aside from Nancy and Monsignor Armanno Ricci. Susie notices Chester in the packed Collins funeral across the hall, and angrily beckons him over. The Monsignor speaks a little about Jackie, what a devout and beloved church member he was (baffling Midge and Susie), then calls Susie up to speak. Angered by the fact that nobody showed up, Susie barges across the hall into the Collins service and hijacks it with an impassioned speech about the injustice of Jackie's death and her dawning realization of how little she really knew him.

Quotes & Dialogue

CHESTER: Crisscross, crisscross.
– S2E5, S2E6
CHESTER: I've been hanging around this resort for seven years, and this is the first time I've ever encountered a like-minded person.
– S2E5
CHESTER: Sounded like you slept well.
SUSIE: Was I snoring?
CHESTER: Or asphyxiating. Either way, I liked it.
JACKIE: How would you like your eggs today, Chester?
CHESTER: Raw.
– S3E7
CHESTER: It's not fair if she gets to keep them.
JACKIE: I'll deal with this. Look, Chester had a cat, but I wouldn't allow it, and he couldn't find someone to take it, so he had to drown it in the Hudson.
– S3E7
SUSIE: I don't want to stay in this apartment. Somebody died here. It's creepy.
CHESTER: Mm, it's not the first time.
SUSIE: Huh?
CHESTER: There's been a lot of deaths in this room.
MIDGE: What?
CHESTER: I researched the apartment's history at the municipal archives before I moved in.
SUSIE: Why?
CHESTER: Because that's the first thing you do before you move into an apartment.
SUSIE: No, it's not.
CHESTER: There was a decapitation. A woman was eaten alive by maggots. Identical twins were disemboweled to music. A pipe exploded, drowning an entire family. Then there's the crib deaths…
MIDGE: Chester! Just eat your eggs.
CHESTER: Hey. Four choking deaths right in this corner. Maybe don't rush me.
– S4E3
