Bob Hope was a comedian. Archive footage of one of his USO Performances appears in an episode of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. He is also referenced in dialogue in a number of other episodes.
S1E5 - Herb tells Midge that many great comedians started out using cue cards, such as Bob Hope. Midge later echoes this to Susie before she goes on. While she bombs for the second time, Midge muses to herself “how did Bob Hope become Bob Hope?”
S1E7 - When Sophie tells Midge that she needs to have a character on stage, Midge retorts that Bob Hope and Lenny Bruce don’t have characters. Sophie points out that they have dicks.
S2E10 - Midge and Lenny discuss Bob Hope and Marilyn Maxwell’s relationship.
S3E1 - Sergeant Broome mentions that Bob Hope once performed on the very same USO stage that Midge is performing on.
S5E2 - Flashforward: Midge tours Vietnam doing shows for the military with Bob Hope.
S5E4 - Mike runs down the list of failed guest replacement attempts as Tina does Gordon’s makeup. Gordon reluctantly allows Mike to try Bob Hope, and Mike runs off to do so.
S5E9 - Midge makes a joke about Bob Hope during her big debut on The Gordon Ford Show.
BOB: Midge, you look wonderful. I love that gown. Is that a Schiaparelli?
MIDGE: Oh, I'm sorry, Bob, but I've forgotten where I bought it.
BOB: You mind if I look at the label?
MIDGE: What does it say?
BOB: “Off limits.”
MIDGE: That's negotiable.
– S5E2
BROOME: Bob Hope played here. Right on that stage. Milton Berle, been here twice. You know how much you'd have to pay to see Bob Hope at the Copacabana?
– S3E1
MIDGE: That's the kind of fame I want. Where I never have to know who I am or where I'm going. Where one day Bob Hope walks up to me at a restaurant and says, “Hi, I'm Bob Hope. You probably don't remember meeting me,” and I say, “Of course I do. I'll have the chicken.”
