- +  * S5E9: Midge bails Susie out of jail. The two go to an automat and Susie tells Midge about her relationship with Hedy. As Midge swings by to change outfits and Rose plans an event, Abe realizes that Esther and Ethan have been faking illness to dodge school. Rose mentions to Midge that her work has been calling incessantly. Midge gets in and rants at Alvin about calling her too much, only to learn that it's actually Mike that's been calling because Gordon wants to see her. Gordon tells Midge that she'll be on the show tonight, and Midge goes back down to the writers to tell them that she needs to leave again because she's on the show and needs to change. As Maggie, Dinah and Susie struggle with the bucket, Midge swans in and excitedly informs them that she's going to be on Gordon Ford tonight. Joel and Archie arrive at the factory to try and secure uniforms for Archie's supper club after Shirley swindled him into taking crappy old stock the last time. This is soon derailed, however, when Moishe and Shirley emerge injured, and Moishe announces that he is retiring. A phone call then comes in for Joel from Midge, leaving Archie alone with Shirley to once again be swindled. Midge tells Joel that she'll be on the show tonight. Midge begins to head back to the office, but Dinah notices she has pigeon-shit on her elbow from leaning on the window-sill. Dinah volunteers to swing by Bergdorf's and pick up one of the dresses that Midge has on hold there, while Susie and Midge head out to the studio. At the studio, Midge works on her set while Meg tries to do her makeup. Dinah arrives with the dresses from Bergdorf's. Trudy comes in and tells Midge that she's got Abe on the line. Midge tells Abe about the show. Abe rushes home and tells Rose about the show. Rose is reluctant to go, but she assents when a series of people call on Midge's orders to make sure she knows to go. Abe and Rose rush out the door and search for a taxi in a panic, ultimately having to catch the bus. Gordon pops into the dressing room to greet Alan Shepard. On his way out, he mockingly reveals to Midge that she will not be doing her act, but will be appearing on the show "as a writer." Susie pursues him and harries him about just what this means, then turns her attention to Mike, imploring him to fix this. Mike approaches Gordon and tries to reason with him, but the show starts before he can make any progress. Abe and Rose arrive just in the nick of time. Midge and Susie sulk in the dressing room as Alan Shepard is beckoned away. Carol Burnett performs "Shy." Plum introduces herself as Midge's stage manager. Carol finishes her song, and Midge is sent out to her stool on the set. Abe, Rose, and Joel all spot her and greet her. The show resumes, and Gordon does his best to humiliate Midge while she is on camera. Midge keeps her cool and gets a few good jokes edgewise, which bruises Gordon's ego, causing him to throw to commercial early. In the commotion, Midge spots an opportunity to seize the mic, and runs it by Susie. When they return from commercial, Midge steals four minutes of airtime for a set and wins Gordon over, kickstarting her career.
